About Thetis Island, BC

Thetis Island from the AirThetis Island is one of the southern gulf islands off the eastern coast of Vancouver Island.  Located in Trincomali Channel - it straddles the 49th Parallel.  It is blessed with a very Mediterranean climate - very mild all year round.  Annual rainfall is approx 33 inches.

Island life is rural and relaxed.  Numerous opportunities for diverse outdoor recreation abound.  With the beaches never far away, watching eagles, kayaking, hiking or just lazing away an afternoon are all quite possible.

Thetis Island was named after H.M.S. Thetis (in turn named after Thetis the Neriad, a sea nymph daughter of Zeus) , a British 36 gun frigate that was on the Pacific station from 1851 to 1853 and surveyed the area. Pioneers first preempted land on Thetis in 1873. In 1896 Lawrence Trail was built through the center of the Island to provide access form Preedy Harbour to the Lawrence homestead on Pilkey Point. Thetis Island and Kuper Island (to the south) were originally joined by mud flats, in 1905 a "cut" was dredged for the first time to allow boat traffic to pass.

Pilkey Point Area of Thetis IslandThe island is still largely forested, with some farmland, some wetlands and meadows.  Most areas have been selectively logged over the past 125 years.  It is entirely privately owned with the exception of the public roadways.  It has several public water access locations from those roadways.

Thetis Island has two marinas, one of which includes a pub and restaurant as well as a post office/small store.  The other has an ice cream/sandwich bar throughout the summer months.  Thetis Island has a summer market where you will find numerous hand-crafted items.  Everything from fresh produce to exquisite Native carvings.  Thetis Island also boasts numerous home-based businesses where you can purchase hand-made pottery, freshly roasted coffee, natural jams & jellies and so much more.  Thetis Island also has a healthy base of service businesses covering a wide range of services.  Thetis Island is also a very active community with it's own community centre - Forbes Hall.  Here we find everything from Bridge Club to community breakfasts going on.  It is a peaceful, tranquil oasis in the midst of a busy world.  A place where you can choose to be very active, or very quiet.  The choice is entirely yours.

Water's Edge at the head of Telegraph HarbourThetis Island is accessible by ferry 12 times a day or by water to either of two marinas or the community dock.  Overnight moorage is only available at the marinas.  See the transportation page for details on getting to Thetis Island.
